Today Georgia commemorates 17 heroes of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war, who fought with Russian troops in the central Georgian village of Shindisi on this day 15 years ago and died on the battlefield.
Only three of the platoon survived in the uneven battle, with the enemy having the feeling they were fighting with a whole division.
In his remarks on the day, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili praised “heroism and dedication” of the fallen servicemembers and once again accused the former United National Movement Government and the currently imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili of “cowardity” and having done a “Russian job” in 2008 by being provoked.
He claimed the territories could be reintegrated through his Government’s “reasonable, peaceful and consistent” policies.
