Georgia has confirmed a new Omicron variant of coronavirus.
Georgian health officials say that two cases of the new strain were confirmed, noting that both individuals have a mild form of the virus and are undergoing treatment at home.
Head of Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze says that the new variant is expected to surge new infections after the New Year, and that Omicron will replace the currently dominant Delta variant in about two months.
Omicron is cited to be less dangerous for lungs than the Delta strain.
According to recent studies, Omicron also has less severe symptoms than the Delta or Delta plus strains.
Omicron has already been detected in more than 89 countries where it caused the surge in daily infections.
