Georgia on Tuesday was elected as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, with voting held in New York, within the framework of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
Georgia has secured 178 votes, and was elected for the second time as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term of 2023-2025.
For the first time, Georgia was elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council in 2015, for the period of 2016-2018.
The members of the Human Rights Council are elected from regional groups according to the geographical principle.
“The UN Human Rights Council is the most important mechanism for improving international standards of human rights protection. It is elected for a three-year term, consists of 47 member states, and its function is to ensure the universal protection of human rights, to respond to human rights violations in the world and to develop relevant recommendations. The Council carries out its activities in Geneva”, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry said that Georgia being elected as a member of the Human Rights Council “is an important success”.
“The membership in the Council provides additional opportunities for the country, together with the international community, to be more actively involved in the decision-making process on issues on the global agenda of human rights protection”, said the ministry.
