Georgia improves its position by 9 points in Global Corruption Index, ranks 41st

Georgia has improved its position by nine points in the Global Corruption Index 2021, by a Swiss international analytics company, ranking 41 among 196 foreign states. 

Last year Georgia ranked 50th in the global index. 

“It is a significant result. In the study Georgia stands out among some member states of NATO and the EU which is a serious impulse for a new phase of reforms to be continued in the country towards anti-corruption, ultimately leading to the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia,”  head of the administration of the Government of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, has stated. 

The 4th edition of the Global Corruption Index (GCI) covers 196 countries and territories and provides a comprehensive overview of the state of corruption around the world based on 43 variables.

Country results are presented on a 0-100 scale, where 0 corresponds to the lowest risk and 100 corresponds to the highest risk.

This year, Finland ranked on top of the GCI, followed by Norway, New Zealand, Denmark and Sweden. 

The European continent remained the best performing region, with the lowest risk score (29.7), well ahead of Oceania (39.6) and North America (43.6), respectively 2nd and 3rd in the regional ranking.

The best performers by region are Canada for North America, Uruguay for South America, Finland for Europe, Mauritius for Africa, Singapore for Asia and New Zealand for Oceania.

The United States ranked 35th out of 196 countries and territories, while China and Russia stand at the 118th and 120th positions respectively.
