Georgian officials have been invited to attend the NATO Washington Summit, scheduled for July 9-11, despite the recent adoption of the controversial foreign influence transparency law, US visa restrictions on unspecified officials, and what allies describe as increased anti-Western rhetoric from the domestic ruling party.

American high official James (Jim) O’Brien announced that Georgia was invited to the upcoming NATO summit through an official letter on Monday. O’Brien, the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, confirmed this during a meeting with reporters about the summit in Washington. “Yes, Georgia and all partners will be invited,” he said.

He further clarified that invitations had already been sent to Georgian representatives to participate in the “partnership events.”
