Today Georgia marks its Constitution day which was adopted on this day, 27 years ago.
The Parliament of Georgia adopted the country’s constitution by 159 votes to eight in 1995, which entered into force on the day of recognition of the powers of the newly elected Parliament of Georgia the same year.
In his message earlier on Wednesday, Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili said that the supreme law, which was based on the “centuries-old statehood traditions of the Georgian nation and the 1921 Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, one of the most progressive legal documents of its era”, laid the foundation for the comprehensive development of a modern democratic state.
“Unwavering commitment to and protection of the supreme law is the key precondition for civic unity, peace, prosperity, and the country’s stability and progress”, Garibashvili said.
The State Constitutional Commission initially worked on a new edition of the 1921 Constitution, the document adopted under the First Democratic Republic of Georgia, but in the end it was decided to adopt a new constitution.
On September 17, 1995, the members of the State Constitutional Commission and the Parliament of Georgia signed the official text of the Constitution in the Government palace where the Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia announced the Act of Restoration of Independence of Georgia.
The constitution has been amended several times since then.
