Georgia is not dependent on Russia for energy, I declare this with full responsibility, – Chairman of the National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission,  Davit Narmania, said on Thursday, amid Europe’s moves to decrease its dependence on Russia following the latter’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Electricity is imported to Georgia from Russia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. We select an importer country based on seasons and offered prices. The state electricity system makes a request for prices and, therefore, imports electricity within the capacity of specific lines”, Narmania said.

In his comments earlier this month, Narmania claimed that Georgia “did not have that luxury” to scrap relatively cheap Russian electricity due to political reasons.

However, noting that Georgia had alternative sources.

He suggested that electricity import was not carried out in Georgia at this stage, since local production was sufficient.
