Georgia has recorded 159 cases of a new strain of coronavirus dubbed as Omicron as of January 4.

The new variant was first detected in South Africa in late autumn of 2021 and has spread rapidly around the world.

Omicron is cited to be less dangerous for lungs than the currently dominant Delta variant.

Georgian health officials say that the new variant is expected to replace Delta in the following two-three months.

Georgia has reported 3,436 new Covid-19 cases of 24,834 tests, 1,805 recoveries, and 32 deaths in the past 24 hours.

24,834 remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia as of today.

1,152,662 people have been fully vaccinated in Georgia since March 2021.
