Between January and June 2022, 2,572 road accidents were reported in Georgia, with 221 people killed and 3,538 others injured, Georgia’s Alliance for Safe Roads said on Monday based on the official data.
The organisation suggested that 1,194 of the 2,572 road accidents occurred in the capital city, with 34 killed and 1,456 injured.
In the past six months,10 minors under 16 were killed, and 408 others were injured in road accidents.
Eka Laliashvili, chairperson of Georgian Alliance for Safe Roads, suggested that compared to the same period of the last year, the number of road accidents has decreased by seven percent, while the number of the killed has increased by 14.5%.
“The figures indicate a serious challenge which needs to be addressed. “
“It is important to consider the international experience and create a road safety fund in the country with more human and financial resources to purposefully take care of the introduction of a ‘safe system’, which includes more work on infrastructure and transport safety issues, improving the behaviour of road traffic participants, and providing first aid after a road accident in a timely and qualified manner”, she said.
A well-known Georgian singer Mamuka Onashvili died on Monday, following a deadly road accident last week.
