Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday said the European Council’s latest move the previous day marked a “momentous occasion” as Georgia “rightfully attained” the status of a candidate for EU membership.

In a plenary session, the official stressed Georgia’s primary objective since gaining independence had been to reclaim its “historical place” in the European family and added “there is no need to prove Georgia’s affiliation with Europe, as the nation stands as one of the earliest European Christian nations—a steadfast bastion of Christendom for centuries and among the pioneers of fully elective European democracies”.

“A nation that has undergone a remarkable transition from Soviet occupation to earning the well-deserved status of an EU candidate country over the past three decades. We, the Georgian people, with our collective unity and occasional contradictions, are the true heroes of this historic achievement”, Papuashvili said.

The official also extended gratitude to “all those who contributed to the accomplishment, working tirelessly to safeguard our freedom and independence and to integrate our country into the European family”.
