Georgia has declared that it wants to become a member of the European Union. We will be happy if this happens. The ball is now in Georgia’s court, German Ambassador to Georgia  Peter Fischer said on Thursday.

“We, Europe, will help Georgia to play successfully. My advice would be that if this is a priority topic for Georgia, it should become a member of the European Union. The country, in this case, should concentrate on this topic.

“Europe is a union of pluralistic democratic countries, that is why the European Council imposed a 12-point recommendation on Georgia. After the implementation of these recommendations, maybe we can talk about the status of the candidate. Then begins the long and difficult road for Georgia to become a member state of the EU”, said the diplomat.

Georgia applied for EU membership in March shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In June, the European Council granted Ukraine and Moldova the bloc’s membership candidate status, while Georgia received European perspective and conditions to fulfill to receive the candidate status next year.

The conditions include the depolarisation of the current political environment and various legal amendments, including a law on deoligarchisation.
