Georgia’s expected EU candidacy attributed to public, not Gov’t – opposition MP

Khatia Dekanoidze, a former leader in the United National Movement opposition party currently representing the Eurooptimists faction, asserted on Tuesday that if Georgia secures European Union candidacy this week, it would be solely due to the people’s merit.

“It is crucial to emphasize that this government has exerted every effort to hinder our attainment of candidate status. Obstacles include the adoption of Russian legislation, the impeachment of the president, and various other measures. Therefore, if we do achieve candidate status, it is solely the result of the unwavering commitment of the citizens of Georgia, with over 75% of them supporting the country’s European integration,” stated Dekanoidze. 

Dekanoidze also highlighted that the geopolitical reality played a “significant role” in the decision to grant candidate status.

“In light of the perilous reality and the threats prevailing in the region, the European Commission has decided not to abandon Georgia in its struggle against Russia. Georgia, where citizens are losing their lives simply because the country is under occupation, and ethnic Georgians are the targets of the occupation regime,” Dekanoidze expressed.

The opposition lawmaker further emphasized that the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024 will serve as a litmus test for Georgia’s democracy. She noted It will also determine whether the next phase of Georgia’s accession to the European Union will be initiated or not.
