The Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee on Thursday gave its support for the election of Giorgi Gabitashvili to the position of General Prosecutor.

Anri Okhanashvili, chairman of the committee, introduced a proposal to conduct the voting for Gabitashvili’s election without a discussion during the plenary session. The committee endorsed his initiative.”We propose to vote on sending a positive recommendation to the plenary session today and to conduct the voting procedure without discussion,” Okhanashvili said.

Okhanashvili also addressed Gabitashvili directly, expressing confidence in his future performance. “The Legal Affairs Committee has faith in your election as the Prosecutor General of Georgia. We believe that your vision and professional conduct will ensure you fulfill your duties in good faith, with high professionalism, and in full compliance with the law. Our aim is to continue working with the best staff possible, which is abundant in Georgia’s prosecutor’s office,” he noted.

Okhanashvili also highlighted the expectation for opposition representatives to pose questions during the Committee on Legal Affairs session. “Today, we had the chance to hear from opposition representatives, who often present their views honestly in front of the cameras. While some opposition MPs were present, others, particularly those known for spreading misinformation, did not attend. This absence suggests that Gabitashvili’s professional conduct has been exemplary, providing a strong basis for our positive decision,” he added.

The plenary session’s final vote will determine Gabitashvili’s official appointment as Georgia’s General Prosecutor.
