Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday reiterated his government’s commitment to a peaceful and pragmatic approach in its dealings with Russia, despite the continued occupation of around 20% of Georgian territory by Russian forces.
Speaking at a panel discussion during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Kobakhidze underscored that although Tbilisi and Moscow did not maintain formal diplomatic relations, economic cooperation between the two countries continued.
“Even under these conditions, we follow a very peaceful and pragmatic vision,” the PM said. “We do not have diplomatic relations with Russia, but at the same time, we are implementing an intensive economic policy and have a trade partnership with Russia.”
Kobakhidze described Georgia’s broader foreign policy strategy as one rooted in economic integration and multilateral cooperation. He noted that Georgia had signed free trade agreements with nearly 50 countries and regions, including the European Union, China, the United Arab Emirates.
Highlighting Georgia’s strategic geographic role, he said, “Georgia has always connected Europe with Asia, the West with the East, both economically and otherwise. This function must be restored as much as possible.”
The PM also emphasized Georgia’s visa-free regime with 50 countries and its commitment to regional peacebuilding. “Our small region is quite complex, with ongoing conflicts among neighboring countries. Georgia has consistently played a positive role in promoting peace in the South Caucasus, a role that is increasingly appreciated,” he said.
Kobakhidze pointed to “strong economic performance” as validation of the government’s strategy, citing an average economic growth rate of 9.4% since 2021 – a figure he described as high both regionally and across Europe.
“Our peaceful vision is not only a moral choice but a practical one. It is working,” he concluded.
