Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday extended his gratitude to the Ambassadors of the European Union and the United States to Georgia for their “unwavering support” on the country’s EU path, following the European Council’s decision the previous day to grant Tbilisi the bloc’s candidate status.

Highlighting the obtaining of the status marked a “significant triumph, a victory rightfully belonging to the people of Georgia”, the official also conveyed gratitude to Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the government.

“While encountering numerous challenges and obstacles, our people persevered, and through concerted efforts, we achieved our goal – the EU candidate status. I extend my thanks to all involved in this transformative process, including the PM, the government, colleagues, and MPs, who dedicated themselves to securing this status”, Kobakhidze said.

He stressed the “appreciation also goes to our friends and partners, with many passionately supporting our nation. Special acknowledgment is reserved for EU Ambassador Pawel Herczynski, whose considerable contributions made today’s celebration possible. Thanks are also due to the Ambassadors of EU member states. I express particular gratitude to the US Ambassador, [Robin Dunnigan], a steadfast advocate for our country”.
