The ruling party is expected to support Giorgi Gabitashvili’s candidacy for the position of Prosecutor General, Givi Mikanadze, the Georgian Dream ruling party, announced on Monday.

Mikanadze highlighted that Gabitashvili had been a prosecutor for many years and holds an “impeccable reputation”.

“Giorgi Gabitashvili is a high-level professional. The public interview process was conducted with unprecedented transparency, and the entire society witnessed his competence. The Prosecution Council’s chosen candidate faced no opposition. His responses and demeanor were solely focused on professionalism, showcasing his knowledge and experience. He has remained apolitical throughout his life, with no documented ties to any official branch or representative. Considering these factors, the ruling team is likely to support his candidacy this week,” said Mikanadze.

Gabitashvili’s candidacy was submitted to Parliament for the position of Prosecutor General of Georgia. The Bureau referred the matter to the Legal Affairs Committee for review. The election of the Prosecutor General is scheduled for an extraordinary session next week, likely on July 18-19.
