Georgia’s Special Investigation Service has announced plans to establish a registry for individuals convicted of pedophilia and sexual extortion. The new database will track those guilty of sexual crimes against children, including blackmail and threats aimed at obtaining and distributing private footage of minors online.

The registry will include offenders convicted under aggravating circumstances, warning potential victims of their past crimes.

Additionally, those listed in the registry will face long-term restrictions on legal rights as mandated by law.

This initiative is not the first of its kind in Georgia. Since 2020, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has maintained a database under the Law On Combating Crimes Against Sexual Freedom and Inviolability. This system records individuals who have lost certain rights after committing serious sexual offenses.

According to 2020 data provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in response to a request from the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), the register included 1,828 individuals convicted of sexual crimes, comprising 207 women and 1,621 men. Information on those in the database is not made public and is available only upon request.
