Georgia officials on Thursday expressed their deep sorrow as Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, witnessed its worst-ever mass shooting when a 24-year-old student went on a rampage at his university, leaving 14 people dead and 25 others wounded.
The assailant is believed to have started the violence by shooting his father before turning the weapon on fellow students and faculty members.
The incident has prompted the government to declare a day of mourning across the central European country on Friday to honor the victims. A special cabinet meeting with President Petr Pavel solidified this decision.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed his deep sadness over the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to his Czech counterpart, the people of the Czech Republic, and the affected families. He also wished a prompt recovery to those injured, emphasizing solidarity during this difficult time.
The Georgian foreign office, while confirming no information about injured Georgian citizens at present, assured that the Embassy in the Czech Republic is in contact with relevant authorities and closely monitoring the situation.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili also offered sympathies to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the Czech Republic. He wished a speedy recovery to all those affected by the tragic events in Prague.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to determine the motive behind the shooter’s actions and whether he took his own life following the spree.
