The Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib and her Georgian counterpart Ilia Darchiashvili on Wednesday discussed ties and Georgia’s European Union integration plans in a Tbilisi meeting, ahead of the bloc’s forthcoming decision later this year whether to grant Georgia its membership candidate status.

“The firm support of the Kingdom of Belgium for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, as well as the country’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration was underlined at the meeting”, the Georgian foreign office said.

Darchiashvili provided his colleague with “comprehensive information” on the steps Georgia was taking to implement the EU candidacy conditions and expressed hope that the country’s  progress and reforms in various directions would be “properly recognized”, the body added.  The importance of Belgium’s support, as the future chair of the EU Council, for Georgia’s European integration was also noted, it added.

The Belgian official visited Georgia as part of her regional trip.
