Georgian chess legend, five-time world champion Nona Gaprindashvili has turned 81 today.
She was born on May 3, 1941 in the city of Zugdidi, western Georgia.
She is a five-time world champion, 11-time winner of the Chess Olympics and an international grandmaster among women and men.
Gaprindashvili is the first holder of the Chess “Oscar”, and is the winner of the European Golden Pawn.
She was awarded the Order of Excellence in 2015 by former President Giorgi Margvelashvili for “her outstanding contribution to the country and nation,” which is one of many of her awards.
The legendary chess player earlier published a book titled “the essence of my life”.
Gaprindashvili sued Netflix last year over its Queen’s Gambit series.
The series says that its fictional hero Beth Harmon was the only female champion who faced men and that Gaprindashvili was a Russian chess player.
