A parliamentary delegation from Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party is on an official visit to the People’s Republic of China, holding a series of strategic meetings aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation.
According to the party, the delegation includes Vice Speaker of Parliament and Political Council member Giorgi Volski, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Education and Youth Affairs Committee Mariam Lashkhi, Chair of the Economic Policy Committee Shota Berekashvili, and Chair of the Agriculture Committee Gela Samkharuli.
During the visit, the Georgian MPs held multi-sectoral meetings with representatives of China’s Communist Party, the National People's Congress, the Ministry of Education’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME), the Shenzhen municipal government, and leading Chinese tech companies.
GD's social medi post reads that Georgia was highlighted as a key geostrategic country within the transcontinental “Middle Corridor” linking Europe and Asia. The corridor’s significance has grown substantially since 2022, marked by a 30% increase in cargo turnover. According to EU policy documents, regional connectivity is gaining growing international relevance.
It also added that for China, strengthening ties with Georgia forms part of a broader strategy to establish alternative connections to European markets—especially important in the context of ongoing geopolitical limitations affecting northern transport routes.
"The main objectives of the visit include consolidating inter-party mechanisms and promoting multi-sectoral development of the China–Georgia strategic partnership in education, agriculture, and economic cooperation—areas vital to Georgia’s socio-economic interests. The delegation emphasized Georgia’s readiness to serve as a key link between East and West," the party stated.
GD assures that Georgia’s role as a transit hub provides access to a market of 2.3 billion consumers through a network of free trade agreements, underscoring its systemic importance in the evolving Eurasian trade landscape.
“The importance of the Middle Corridor has long been recognized, but today it is crucial for both East and West. Connecting these two markets cannot happen without the Middle Corridor,” Vice Speaker Giorgi Volski stated.
He also noted that Georgia’s geopolitical location meets the standards required to revive the historic Silk Road. "Transformations through Georgia will have a direct positive impact on the economic and social well-being of the Georgian people,” he added.
