The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on Tuesday claimed it continued its established approach to the Magnitsky Act in recent years, “a stance communicated to our partners”.

In response to inquiries about Georgia’s decision not to participate in the extension of the “Magnitsky List” until December 8, 2026, the Ministry explained, “Georgia has consistently adhered to its recent practices concerning the mentioned document, a fact known to our partners. In terms of overall statistics, the rate of accession to EU declarations has seen a significant surge in the past year, reaching up to 50 percent.

Georgia is absent from the list of nations supporting the extension of the Magnitsky list for an additional three years.

The Global Magnitsky Act of 2016 authorizes the US government to sanction those foreign government officials worldwide that are human rights offenders, freeze their assets, and ban them from entering the country.
