Georgian judge elected ECHR section president

Lado Chanturia, a judge of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) from Georgia, has been elected as the president of one of the court’s sections in a recent election conducted by secret ballot.

Chanturia, who has served as a judge on the ECHR since 2018, will now hold the leadership position within the court.

Chanturia previously served as Georgia’s Minister of Justice, the Chairman of the Supreme Court, and the Ambassador of Georgia to Germany. In 2023, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the ECHR’s Fifth Section.

The European Court of Human Rights, responsible for adjudicating human rights cases across Europe, is divided into five sections to manage its caseload effectively. Each section operates as an administrative entity with its own judicial chamber. These sections are led by a President, Vice President, and a group of judges.
