Georgian public advocate Nino Lomjaria has discussed the topic of Georgia’s former president Mikheil Saakashvili, who was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1, during her meetings in the US.
Lomjaria says that she has thanked the US government representatives for their involvement in Saakashvili’s imprisonment and hunger strike case and the support for the office.
“Without the US’ so open support for the position of the Georgian Public Defender’s office, we might appear in a different situation,” Lomjaria says.
Several ruling Georgian Dream party officials have accused Lomjaria of being biased and also stated that a conclusion made by the medical panel invited by her to study Saakashvili’s health condition while on hunger strike was ‘fake.’
The US Department of State, however, praised Lomjaria’s work and her role in the case.
Saakashvili called off his 50-day hunger strike on November 19 and is now undergoing treatment in Gori military hospital.
