Georgian Parliament Speaker explains absence of diplomatic corps at inaugural session

Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, explained on Monday why foreign ambassadors were not invited to the inaugural session of the newly elected Parliament. In response to questions about the absence of diplomatic representatives, Papuashvili stated, “Foreign ambassadors are not invited to the first session in other countries either, in order to avoid interference in internal political issues. I think it is important that we have this general approach to the Parliament.”

He further emphasized the significance of the day, saying, “This day, as it will beautify our country, will be our national day.” Papuashvili highlighted that the first session of Parliament was primarily a celebration of the citizens of Georgia and their elected representatives: “Today we have the first session of the parliament elected by the citizens of Georgia. This day is, first of all, the day of our citizens, their elected parliament.”

The Speaker noted that the Government, constitutional bodies, and representatives of the Orthodox Church would be present at the session. He also addressed the issue of foreign participation in Georgian politics, saying, “We have the unfortunate experience of the instrumentalization of foreign participation in Georgian politics.

Therefore, we think it is best for everyone that the Parliament adopts this general approach, precisely in order to avoid inappropriate interference in internal political issues and the instrumentalization of various matters.”
