Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Thursday pointed to “false dilemmas” created over the case of currently imprisoned former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili that “force” MEPs vote for certain resolutions, including that one earlier this week which called for the release of the former president on health grounds.
The official stressed the decision-making process had its own specificity in the European Parliament, with a group of parliamentarians taking responsibility for certain countries and other MEPs following their lines.
“When a MEP faces such a dilemma [that if Saakashvili remains in prison he may die], such a false dilemma, of course, it affects someone emotionally, and they prefer to vote for such resolutions”, Papuashvili told Imedi TV.
He also said linking Saakashvili’s release [by several MEPs] with Georgia receiving the European Union membership candidate status was a “direct blackmail”, a “very undemocratic approach”.
