Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili and Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev on Friday highlighted their countries role in provision of Europe with green energy, in reference to the Black Sea submarine cable project signed last year.
In a press briefing in the Azerbaijanian city of Gabala, Aliyev stressed Georgia and Azerbaijan played a “critically important” role in ensuring Europe’s energy security, and added the countries’ role in this regard was “ growing” on the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Garibashvili also stressed the importance of the project and cited Azerbaijan as a “very strong strategic partner”.
In comments on the ongoing conflict, Garibashvili reiterated it was the “biggest challenge” for Europe since WWII and stressed the main goal of his government was to “maintain peace and security”.
Prior to the briefing, the officials also held a face-to-face meeting, discussing joint projects, political, trade, transit and economic issues, as well as existing security challenges, the government press office said.
