Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, on Monday announced his resignation during a briefing held at the government administration. He revealed his decision to the public, stating, “I would like to inform the public about the decision that we discussed with the team. Today, I am stepping down from the PM’s post”.

During the briefing, Garibashvili, who took the post for the second time in 2021, disclosed that he had received an offer from the political council of the ruling Georgian Dream party to assume the role of the GD chairman, with a related congress scheduled to be convened on February 1.

“I won’t hide from you that during the discussions in the Council, the possibility of remaining until the summer, before the commencement of the election campaign, was considered. However, I have chosen to make this decision now,” he explained and stressed the importance of the “timely transition” to a new prime minister – who is reported to be Irakli Kobakhidze, the current chair of the GD, who he claimed could form a new cabinet.
