Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday opened the government session by reflecting on the struggle against Soviet occupation and commemorating the two-year anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, underscoring the “grave reality” of Russia’s military aggression, and emphasizing the “enduring significance of peace”.

“Over the past two years, Ukraine has borne the brunt of devastation, with its economy and infrastructure left in ruins. The extent of occupied territory now surpasses that which Russia initially seized,” Kobakhidze said, who replaced Irakli Garibashvili in the role earlier this month.

The official also drew parallels between Ukraine’s plight and Georgia’s own challenges.

“Within this timeframe, we too faced a different kind of battle – a struggle against radical opposition and their allies in the pursuit of domestic tranquility. Thankfully, the state emerged victorious in this arduous conflict. Our nation stands in peace today, providing a solid foundation for our continued progress and development,” Kobakhidze affirmed.

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a full-scale assault on Ukraine, resulting in the tragic loss of thousands of lives, including innocent civilians. The Russian military itself sustained significant casualties.Throughout this period, the ruling party in Georgia has alleged that opposition factions sought to foment unrest, dubbing them the “war party” for their perceived intent to “drag” the country into the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
