Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday held a farewell meeting with Marek Szczygieł, the Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia.

The Head of Government thanked Szczygieł for the mission’s “effective performance and implemented activities”.

The official noted the EUMM had worked toward preventing the escalation of the situation along the occupation line and ensuring security on the ground, since 2008 as the only international mission vested with a monitoring mandate.

“Along with other valuable EU instruments, the presence of the Monitoring Mission in Georgia clearly illustrates the important role of the EU in the cause of dealing with the consequences of the 2008 Russo-Georgian War and peaceful conflict resolution”, Garibashvili said.

Szczygieł, a Polish diplomat,  took the post in February 2020.
