Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili on Thursday met with her German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin to “facilitate” Tbilisi’s obtaining the European Union membership candidate status later this year, despite the Government’s rejection of her 10 foreign visits, including to Germany, Ukraine and Belgium.

The Government of Georgia on Wednesday cited the country’s constitution, which gives it an authority for the country’s foreign course, behind its denial, amid ongoing controversies with Zourabichvili.

The President, who was backed by the current ruling party in the post in 2018 elections, has several times accused the Georgian Dream authorities of “demonizing” the West and pushing the “Kremlin orchestrated propaganda” on Tbilisi’s “dragging” into the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
