Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said on Tuesday that “we must categorically condemn the referendums that are being held today in Eastern Ukraine”, calling the process a “cynical action” of Russia.

“Because we know what referendums mean, when they are held in the occupied territory, in the conditions of war, what they mean and what they can be. This is an extremely cynical action by Russia, which is unacceptable for us and for the world, for civilized people”, Zourabichvili said.

In the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, as well as in the occupied part of Zaporozhye and Kherson districts, an illegal referendum on the issue of joining Russia began on September 23, with voting continuing for five days.

The administration of the President of Ukraine has stated that the pseudo-referendums cannot ensure the legalization of the occupation of the Ukrainian territories.

The illegal referendum was condemned by many countries of the world, although the Georgian government has not officially responded to it until now.
