A Georgian lawmaker has accused the opposition of attempting to mislead young voters by promoting the idea of a coalition government ahead of the country’s municipal elections this autumn.
Archil Gorduladze, chair of the parliamentary legal affairs committee, criticised opposition parties - particularly the United National Movement (UNM) - claiming their campaign is based on "deception" and a false portrayal of their political unity.
“The opposition is trying to convince young people that a coalition government is the best form of government,” Gorduladze said. “But their real aim is to present the members of the National Movement as a legitimate coalition, which is not the case.”
He accused opposition figures of lacking a coherent strategy and suggested they were using local elections as a pretext for future parliamentary campaigning. “Even they don’t seem to understand what they’re doing,” Gorduladze said, adding that “their chances are absolutely zero.”
Gorduladze went on to describe the alliance of opposition parties as the “collective UNM” and claimed their unity was driven by “external instructions” rather than shared political principles.
