Georgian ruling party MP slams German Ambassador over canceled military projects, accuses West of exploiting Georgian soldiers

Irakli Kadagishvili, an MP of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday criticised German Ambassador Peter Fischer following comments about the cancellation of military projects in Georgia due to the Government’s alleged anti-Western course.

Kadagishvili argued that the projects were primarily designed to serve foreign interests in conflict zones like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa, where the West was “too reluctant to send their own troops.” He claimed, “sending a Georgian soldier was far cheaper than sending their own”.

Fischer had expressed concern over Georgia’s current policy, which he said had led to the halting of major military collaborations with Germany. The ambassador made these remarks during a celebration of the German armed forces’ founding, where he underscored Germany’s military cooperation with Georgia.

Kadagishvili, however, framed the issue as part of Georgia’s decision to protect its sovereignty, asserting that Georgia had shown “courage and patriotism” by not aligning itself with “foreign interests” to “drag the country” into the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
