The Georgian State Security Service on Monday revealed that reports of possible explosive devices in Batumi were false alarms following conducted searches in shopping centers and educational institutions.
The unsettling messages, originating from outside the country, were linked to the mobile phone of a minor Georgian citizen, suggesting a deliberate attempt to induce fear. A criminal case for false reporting of terrorism has been initiated, with investigations underway to identify the responsible party, the agency said.
International cooperation is being sought to trace the origin of the messages.
The agency also said false reports concerning a terrorist attack on Gallery Tbilisi mall in December and January were also debunked.
“These reports were connected to international online games involving minors, with the instigators identified as a specific group located abroad”, the agency noted.
