The Georgian people have decided that the coronavirus pandemic is already over. However, Covid has no such plans, Doctor Bidzina Kulumbegov said on Tuesday as daily cases of the infection are surging.

Kulumbegov stated that the upward trend could point at the beginning of the seventh wave of the virus in Georgia, noting that the current situation was not alarming.

He said that the mutated virus was more contagious than its previous strains, lingering the end of the pandemic which was declared two years ago.

Georgian Health Minister Zurab Azarashvili said on Monday that the situation was “stable and fully manageable”, dismissing reports that the government could reimpose restrictions.

Georgia reported 2,570 new cases of Covid-19 last week, with the figure for weekly confirmed cases over the weeks featuring an upward trend.

The county has officially confirmed 1,662,299 cases of coronavirus since February 26, 2020.

The virus has claimed 16,844 lives since April 2020.
