Georgians to rally against election results in Tbilisi today after President’s call for action

President Salome Zourabichvili on Sunday condemned the results of Georgia’s recent parliamentary elections and called on the public to rally at the Georgian parliament the next day.

Describing Saturday’s general elections as “illegitimate,” the President urged citizens to gather and express their dissatisfaction with the outcome, which has led to protests among opposition supporters and calls for a reevaluation of the results.

In a briefing held at the presidential palace, Zourabichvili spoke alongside opposition leaders whose parties surpassed the electoral threshold to secure parliamentary representation.

Among those present was Dimitri Tskitishvili, representing the Gakharia for Georgia party. The opposition leaders collectively voiced their refusal to acknowledge the Central Election Commission’s (CEC) report, which showed the ruling Georgian Dream party securing a majority of 53.93% of the vote. The President pledged to attend the rally and stand with opposition leaders as they engage with citizens at the legislative building.

The Central Election Commission’s preliminary count, completed on Sunday, recorded the distribution of votes as follows: Georgian Dream received 53.93%; the Coalition for Change, 11.03%; Unity – National Movement, 10.16%; Strong Georgia, 8.81%; and Gakharia for Georgia, 7.77%.

Voter turnout for the October 26 elections reached 58.94%, with a reported 2,060,412 ballots cast.
