Georgia’s Minister of Justice Rati Bregadze on Thursday expressed confidence in the State Security Service’s ability to “handle the investigation successfully” in relation to an alleged plot targeting Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chair of Georgia’s ruling party.

The plot is reported to be organized and financed by former high-ranking officials of the United National Movement Georgian government with the use of volunteers fighting in Ukraine.

Bregadze emphasized that the State Security Service was expected to keep the public informed about the investigation “without compromising national security”.

“The State Security Service has repeatedly demonstrated its capability by preventing many threats to the public. Naturally, this investigation will also be successfully completed,” Bregadze stated. He assured the public that the Service would provide necessary updates without jeopardizing state security. “The work of the State Security Service involves state secrets, and I am confident they will provide necessary updates without jeopardizing state security,” he added.

The investigation is being conducted under the first part of Article 18-323 and the first part of Article 315 of the Civil Code of Georgia, focusing on the preparation of a terrorist act and conspiracy to overthrow the government.
