Georgia’s First Vice Speaker of Parliament, Gia Volski, has accused the European Union’s Ambassador in Tbilisi, Paweł Herczyński, of aligning himself with the country’s opposition, calling him the “political leader” of the United National Movement.
His remarks come on Friday as former President Salome Zourabichvili was allegedly holding talks at the US Embassy in the Georgian capital.
“We don’t know what issues are being discussed, but we are sure that the US Embassy will make a relevant statement,” Volski told reporters, referring to Zourabichvili’s visit. “The United States is not known for hiding such meetings.”
Volski further accused the diplomat of persistently issuing “directly political statements.” The Vice Speaker claimed the EU diplomat was acting on instructions from a foreign figure under scrutiny by the European Court, suggesting an orchestrated campaign of external interference in Georgian politics.
“Herczyński has become the political leader of the United National Movement,” he said, referencing Georgia’s main opposition party. “This is a scheme not limited to Georgia. There is serious tension across the European space, including regarding the person giving instructions to Herczyński.”
