Bärbel Bas, the president of the German Bundestag, will visit Georgia today on the invitation of her Georgian counterpart Shalva Papuashvili, the parliament press office said.

The visit, which the Georgian legislative body said would come at an “important moment”, would serve “further strengthening of bilateral ties”.

The German official is scheduled to discuss Tbilisi’s EU integration prospects ahead of the bloc’s forthcoming decision later this year whether to grant the country its membership candidate status, general situation in the country and security challenges sparked by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

She will meet with Papuashvili, the president and the prime minister.

Before leaving the country on Wednesday, the German official will visit the occupation line in central Georgia.
