German Bundestag representatives concerned over Georgian Government’s trajectory

Representatives from the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag have raised serious concerns regarding the current trajectory of the Georgian government following their visit to Georgia from September 4-6. In a public statement, they warned that recent developments are threatening Georgia’s path towards European Union membership.

The Bundestag representatives emphasized that the majority of the Georgian population supports EU membership, with this goal even enshrined in the country’s constitution. However, they noted that the Georgian government’s current actions are undermining this aspiration.

“The recent authoritarian trends and undemocratic measures are eroding the democratic will of the people, and the current course is blocking Georgia’s way to the European Union,” the statement said.

The delegation also warned that if the government continues along this path, the German Bundestag will be unable to support the opening of negotiations for Georgia’s EU accession. They expressed particular concern over the recently passed Foreign Influence Transparency Law, which they believe threatens fundamental freedoms and weakens the country’s civil society—a vital component of any democracy.

The Bundestag delegation also urged the Georgian government to halt any measures that restrict minority rights, freedom of the press, and political opposition. They highlighted the upcoming parliamentary elections on October 26 as a critical moment for Georgia’s democratic future. They emphasized that the international community will be closely monitoring the process to ensure free and fair elections.

“As representatives of the Foreign Affairs Committee, we stand firmly with the people of Georgia, who overwhelmingly wish to join the European Union,” the statement read, adding that a commitment to human rights and the rule of law is crucial not only for Georgia’s future but also as a signal to the international community that democracy and the rule of law are the foundation of a free society.
