German Embassy raises concerns over persecution of protestors in Georgia

The German Embassy in Georgia has condemned the “deliberate persecution” of individuals defending their fundamental rights, warning that such actions undermine democracy, the judiciary, and the rule of law in the country.

In their statement, the embassy highlighted the ongoing trials of citizens detained during recent protests, specifically mentioning the cases of Avtandil Kuchava and Davit Gogilashvili. The embassy confirmed its close monitoring of these proceedings, alongside European, American, and British partners, to ensure that the rule of law is respected in the courts.

“We attended their trials at the Tbilisi City Court last week, and we are paying particular attention to whether the principles of the rule of law are upheld,” the statement read. The detained demonstrators are accused of disobeying law enforcement agencies’ orders, with many alleging they were victims of excessive police violence during the protests.

The German Embassy stressed that persecuting individuals who stand up for their rights threatens not only the legal framework but also the fundamental democratic values in Georgia.

Protests began in Georgia following the Government’s decision in November 2024 to halt EU accession negotiations until 2028.
