German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has said that Ukraine’s victory in the war against Russia is in the shared interest of NATO.
In an interview with WAZ, Wadephul described NATO as the world’s strongest defensive alliance and stressed that growing global risks require greater unity among allies.
“Our common interest is that Ukraine wins its military confrontation with Russia. This should not be questioned, we must build on our progress,” he said.
He added that, despite political rhetoric, the United States continues to provide “significant support” to Ukraine, enabling it to withstand ongoing aggression. Germany, he noted, has become Kyiv’s key partner in Europe.
Wadephul said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had confirmed this during his recent visit to Ukraine, where he reassured the Ukrainian leader that Berlin would remain a strong donor.
The Minister also expressed concern over discussions about a potential US withdrawal from NATO, warning that the alliance remains critical to the security of all its members.
He pointed to NATO’s recent expansion to include Sweden and Finland, as well as commitments by member states to increase defence spending to up to five per cent of gross domestic product.
Debate over NATO’s future has intensified following statements by US President Donald Trump, who said Washington was considering leaving the alliance after it declined to support a US operation in Iran.
