Germany on Wednesday enlisted Georgia and Moldova as safe countries, allowing responsible agencies to process the applications of asylum seekers in shortests terms possible and deport illegal migrants.

Last year and in the first half of 2023, 99.9% of asylum seekers’ applications from the countries – which last year applied for the membership of the European Union – were rejected. In total, 8,865 citizens of Georgia and 5,218 citizens of Moldova have sought asylum in Germany in the last year, the country’s Interior Ministry said.

Minister Nancy Fezer, who had proposed the bill, said earlier this week labeling the countries as safe would contribute to the decrease in numbers of asylum seekers, adding as the states had applied for EU membership, the cases of political prosecution were expected not to be high.
