German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has denied reports that he is blocking plans for an additional €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine. The claims were first published by Der Spiegel, citing sources who suggested that Scholz opposed the measure ahead of Germany’s parliamentary elections scheduled for February 23.
In an interview with Tagesspiegel, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius dismissed the reports, stating there was “no blockade” but acknowledging that the proposal had yet to be fully agreed upon within the government.
Germany, which has provided €4 billion in military aid to Ukraine this year, is one of the largest European contributors to Kyiv’s defense against Russia. However, Der Spiegel suggested that Chancellor Scholz was reluctant to commit additional funds during the election campaign to avoid alienating voters of his Social Democratic Party (SPD).
The proposal for more aid is reportedly backed by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Defence Minister Pistorius, who argue that further assistance is critical as the conflict continues.
In addition to the funding debate, Scholz has also come under criticism for his refusal to supply Ukraine with Taurus long-range missiles. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly urged Berlin to provide the weaponry, arguing it would strengthen their ability to counter Russian forces.
