German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday said that his country should be ready for the escalation of the situation in Ukraine, which could include the destruction of infrastructure.

“Given Russia’s visible and growing failure, we must be ready for escalation,” Scholz said at a conference organized by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in Berlin.

He said that his last visit to China “was worth it” for the two countries to establish a joint position against the use of nuclear weapons.

According to Scholz, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was “a lesson”, and stated that 100 billion euros had been  allocated to increase Germany’s armed defense stocks.
