German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the Georgian people while expressing concerns over the country’s democratic trajectory.

“On this day 50 years ago, the Twinning Partnership Saarbrücken – Tbilisi was signed – connecting people. Today it is suffering because of the democratic backsliding in Georgia, that Germany & EU have certified. Germany will continue to build links with Georgian people,” the Ambassador wrote on X.

The Saarbrücken-Tbilisi partnership, established in 1974, has played a crucial role in fostering cultural and economic ties between the two cities. However, the Ambassador’s comments suggest that recent political tensions are affecting these long-standing connections.
