A court in Tbilisi has found a minor guilty of giving false testimony during proceedings related to the death of teacher Giga Avaliani and sentenced the defendant to three years in prison, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors said the offence took place on 24 March 2026 during a hearing at Tbilisi City Court involving charges of organising and participating in group violence connected to Avaliani's death.

According to the prosecution, the minor, who was questioned as a witness, deliberately provided false testimony in an attempt to obstruct the administration of justice.

The offence carries a maximum sentence of up to seven years' imprisonment.

The court found the defendant guilty as charged and initially imposed a four-year prison sentence.

Under the Juvenile Justice Code, the sentence was reduced by one quarter, resulting in a final sentence of three years' imprisonment, the Prosecutor's Office said.
