The origin of the chemical substance allegedly used during anti-government protests must be urgently established, as only a few countries produce it, Economic Policy Research Center senior researcher Gigi Gigiadze said on Wednesday.

According to Gigiadze, if the use of a chemical agent was confirmed, investigators must determine which country supplied the material.

“It is a very important question where this substance was purchased, because only several countries manufacture it,” Gigiadze noted. “If the use of chemical weapons is confirmed, it is essential to identify who supplied it.”

He stressed that the chemical agents banned after World War I were strictly prohibited, and their acquisition - let alone potential use against a population - was unacceptable.
