Georgian opposition leaders have called for new elections and the release of political prisoners, describing these steps as crucial for the country’s European integration.

Speaking during the Political Assembly of the European People’s Party (EPP) in Brussels, Gigi Tsereteli, leader of the Unity – National Movement, said the measures would send a “clear signal” of Georgia’s commitment to European values.

“Every leader we meet, whether from the European Commission or the EPP, agrees that new elections and the release of prisoners are vital for Georgia to accelerate its integration into Europe”,Tsereteli said.

The opposition figures, including Tina Bokuchava, Chairwoman of the United National Movement, have been engaging with European political leaders during their visit.

According to Tsereteli, the meetings underscored concerns over what he described as the “anti-Western policies” of Georgia’s current government.

“Brussels is the best place to see the consequences of these policies and the steps being taken by the de facto government. The new resolution prepared here is a clear message to the EPP and beyond,” he added.

The resolution, reportedly backed by EPP members, calls for a renewed focus on democratic reforms in Georgia, including free and fair elections and the protection of human rights.
